چکیده

We propose an approach to categorize real-world natural scenes based on a semantic typicality measure. The proposed typicality measure allows to grade the similarity of an image with respect to a scene category. We argue that such a graded decision is appropriate and justified both from a human’s perspective as well as from the image-content point of view. The method combines bottomup information of local semantic concepts with the typical semantic content of an image category. Using this learned category representation the proposed typicality measure also quantifies the semantic transitions between image categories such as coasts, rivers/lakes, forest, plains, mountains or sky/clouds. Themethod is evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively on a database of natural scenes. The experiments show that the typicality measure well represents the diversity of the given image categories as well as the ambiguity in human judgment of image categorization.

Estimating scene typicality from human ratings and image features

Scenes, like objects, are visual entities that can be categorized into functional and semantic groups. One of the core concepts of human categorization is the idea that category membership is graded: some exemplars are more typical than others. Here, we obtain human typicality rankings for more than 120,000 images from 706 scene categories through an online rating task on Amazon Mechanical Turk...

Associative and similarity-based processes in categorization decisions.

Two experiments were directed at distinguishing associative and similarity-based accounts of systematic differences in categorization time for different items in natural categories. Experiment 1 investigated the correlation of categorization time with three measures of instance centrality in a category. Production frequency (PF), rated typicality, and familiarity from category norms for British...

Quantifying the internal structure of categories using a neural typicality measure.

How categories are represented continues to be hotly debated across neuroscience and psychology. One topic that is central to cognitive research on category representation but underexplored in neurobiological research concerns the internal structure of categories. Internal structure refers to how the natural variability between-category members is coded so that we are able to determine which me...

SceneNet: A Perceptual Ontology for Scene Understanding

Scene recognition systems which attempt to deal with a large number of scene categories currently lack proper knowledge about the perceptual ontology of scene categories and would enjoy significant advantage from a perceptually meaningful scene representation. In this work we perform a large-scale human study to create “SceneNet”, an online ontology database for scene understanding that organiz...

Categorization and Typicality 1 Similarity-based Categorization and Fuzziness of Natural Categories Categorization and Typicality 2 Similarity-based Categorization and Fuzziness of Natural Categories

The adequacy of similarity to prototype as an account of categorization in natural concepts was assessed by analyzing the monotonicity of the relation between typicality of an item in a category and the probability of a positive categorization response using data from McCloskey & Glucksberg (1978). The analysis revealed a strong underlying similarity-based threshold curve, with systematic devia...
